prospero's magicks.

WITHIN A QUIET NEIGHBORHOOD OF HIGHSTORM, several blocks from Yima's manor, sits a crumbling three-story house. The rusty mailbox is almost always stuffed full with ignored letters and the yard is overgrown with thorny flowers and shrubs. A large sign above the mailbox made of stamped metal reads PROSPERO'S MAGICKS, with SPELLS • POTIONS • LESSONS • LOMBARDY in cracked painted letters underneath.
A thick column of smoke rises from the chimney at all hours of the day and night, and on occasion a worryingly loud noise can be heard coming from within, but rarely is anyone ever seen entering or exiting through the front door. Similarly, the doorbell goes unanswered. When questioned about the building, the neighbors give you a weary look. They tell you the current resident moved in about four months before the first round of new Shard-Bearers arrived, and while "Sorcerer Prospero" keeps to himself, they'd stay away from the house if they were you. Rumor has it that the secretive magician, whoever he is, engages in dangerous experiments, and some report seeing visitors enter the house and never leave.
Oh, but that isn't going to discourage you, is it? Depending on which city you happen to be in when you first hear of the true purpose of this house, you may not even looking for someone by that name. Whoever and whatever you came here to find, if you intend to follow your lead to the end, you must approach the door of the house.

WITHIN...
FOR SOMEONE AS FLAMBOYANT AS "PROSPERO," the inside of Prospero's is relatively modest. And for someone so well-known for living in a cluttered nightmare of a living space, it's surprisingly tidy.
On the left side of the entrance, a tea table and four chairs are set up beside the house's largest window, along with several large bookshelves and mantles carrying assorted natural and manmade objects. To the right of that is a brass faucet and tiled sink built into the wall. The back left corner of the room is taken up by a large stone hearth with an arching mantel, forming part of the support for the open chimney in the ceiling above. A small closet near the front door contains a row of hooks for the storage of hats, coats and umbrellas.
Observant visitors may notice a pattern of lines and circles is drawn on the wooden ceiling and support beams in white chalk. Oddly, there seems to be no stairs leading upwards to the second and third floors that are clearly visible from outside.
In front of the hearth is a work table, already covered with a few half-made spells, and along the shop's right and back walls are rows of shelves and countertops. Some cabinets are kept shut, but a few have doors ajar, giving visitors a glimpse of their miscellaneous contents: fruits and vegetables, animal bones, folded fabrics, tools, broken tools, candles, and dozens and dozens of labelled bottles and boxes and packages.
Similar items, like dried flowers, strings of garlic and tulip bulbs, broken seashells, and other various natural knickknacks, are strewn about the shop — as decor, probably... or are they there for some other purpose? Whatever the reason may be, the inside of Prospero's carries the same scent of hyacinth flowers that always follows Howl, and even though the door's propped open to the outside air, the inside of the shop stays comfortable temperature in any weather. Every so often, the crackling of the fire sounds like someone smacking their lips or clearing their throat, but surely it's your imagination playing tricks on you. The odor of perfume in this place is very strong.

SERVICES
WELCOME TO PROSPERO'S MAGICKS! — Or, Wizard Jenkin's Magicks. Or, "the Great Robles' Aefoundry," or "Auguries and Arts"... Or whatever other alias you may have found yourself searching for on your way to Howl's doorstep.
Assuming you make it inside, based on whatever breadcrumb trail lead you here, the wizard within has a host of services to offer you. Like many similar establishments, the walls and shelves will be filled with spells, potions and special ingredients for sale. Moreover, Howl's secondary business is that of a pawn shop; along with offering credit through the pawning of items, an eclectic collection of items surrendered by non-payment are also available for purchase.
But aside from operating this magical supply store and pawn shop, Howl will be quick to offer lessons to those trying to learn magic for the first time. He will be especially eager to assist with anyone that he recognizes as being a new Shard-Bearer, who may be having difficulty tapping into their first magic spells. Or maybe you came here specifically for that purpose? Chances are, Howl can be convinced into giving you a steep discount, if not waiving his fee entirely — especially if you make a good impression on the fire demon who lives in the fireplace!
But that isn't all. There are hints of another looming presence within the mansion — an extra cup of tea, additional pair of shoes, maybe even an extra plate of food. Those who take lessons will never encounter this other presence... unless they summon the courage to ask, of course. As it turns out, "Prospero" is not only an alias, but one that could represent two people: the cursed young wizard known as Howl, and the self-professed sorcerer of eld, Emet-Selch, who takes those jobs and requests that fall outside of Howl's expertise.
